Making the office a happy place: Abi Terrazas shares the joys of 16 years of administration

In honor of Masergy’s 20th anniversary, we’re sitting down with some of our most tenured employees who have shaped the company into what it is today. Our celebration wouldn’t be complete without hearing Abi Terrazas’s story. As Masergy’s Facilities and Administration Manager, she has been at the heart of all office activities for the last 16 years.

Whatever you need, Terrazas is there to help with a smile on her face. From working with property managers to fixing employees’ workstations, she loves helping people any way she can.

“To keep a company successful, you have to keep their people successful. It’s my team’s job to make sure that employees don’t have to think twice about what they need. The joy of my job is seeing what I do translate into the top-quality service our employees provide to our customers,” she explained.

It’s the little things that help Terrazas and her team go above and beyond for Masergy’s employees, starting with a cherished tradition of Friday morning donuts. When she first joined Masergy in 2004–a scrappy startup of around 60 people–the executive team wanted to make sure those working in the company’s 24×7 network operations center felt appreciated. “When we first started out, I was picking up six dozen donuts. In early 2020, before work-from-home mandates went into effect, that number was about 30 dozen,” she said.

Measuring Masergy’s growth in donuts is just one of the many fun aspects of her duties.

As designated “Snack Lady,” Terrazas keeps all fridges stocked with popular food and drink (gluten- and dairy-free are big nowadays). As of this month, the Masergy snack landscape will increase with the newly finished construction of Masergy’s expanded office space and state-of-the-art executive briefing center. The center includes four new suites, seven kitchens and 12 additional refrigerators, and when office capacity returns to normal all of those will need to be filled and maintained.

It’s a testament to how much Masergy has succeeded over the years, and yet much has stayed the same. Particularly, the people who have been a part of it. “That’s what has kept me here all these years,” said Terrazas. “I love the people who make this company what it is. It’s rare to find, let alone preserve for 20 years.”

Terrazas and her team have also been playing a critical role during the surge of COVID-19. This has included reaching out to every employee for a personal wellness check. If any employee was exhibiting signs of distress, depression or anxiety, Terrazas’s team immediately put them in touch with Masergy’s HR Director. As Facilities Manager, she also coordinated with property managers to get toilet paper in bulk and distribute it to employees for personal use at home. “It’s our job to always go the extra mile, but now more than ever. We’re humbled to be able to help in whatever way we can to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our employees at this time.”

So, what does the future hold for Masergy? “Having been with the company for so long and seeing how it has grown so much, I can’t even imagine where we’ll be 20, 10 or even five years from now,” she said. “It’s exciting to think about. The sky’s the limit.”
