On March 17th, Vertical Systems Group (VSG) announced that Comcast Business achieved the #2 position on their year-end 2021 U.S. Carrier Managed SD-WAN Services LEADERBOARD. Market leaders are ranked based on on-site share. Moving up from #4 in 2020, Comcast Business’s jump is the largest among all providers ranked in 2021, making us the fastest growing SD-WAN company. Moreover, we’re now a mere 2% away from taking the #1 position.
The Masergy acquisition is one of the key reasons Comcast Business made the big leap.
The announcement reports, “Comcast gained share due to organic growth from activations of large customer networks, in addition to U.S. SD-WAN sites added from its acquisition of Masergy in October 2021.” In March 2021, Masergy announced it’s best year ever with cloud networking and SD-WAN bookings up 110%.
“We are proud Comcast Business ranked number two on the 2021 Managed SD-WAN Services LEADERBOARD as it validates our approach to disrupting legacy technology with future-ready solutions,” said Bob Victor, SVP Customer Solutions, Comcast Business, in the press release. “As wide-area networks evolve, Enterprises can confidently partner with Comcast Business for their SD-WAN solutions to accelerate their digital transformation journeys.”
With more site share year over year, Comcast Business has been progressively rising in position:
“Competition is heating up as evidenced by the shake-up in top provider rankings on our year-end 2021 U.S. LEADERBOARD benchmark,” said Rick Malone, principal of Vertical Systems Group, in the press release. “The U.S. Managed SD-WAN services market emerged from the pandemic in 2021 with solid growth in new site installations, driven by accelerated network transformations and more flexible solutions for customers.”
How does Vertical Systems Group qualify the market players? Market Players include providers selling Carrier Managed SD-WAN services in the U.S. with site share below one percent (1%), including global network providers that manage U.S. customer sites.
VSG defines a Carrier Managed SD-WAN Service for segment analysis and share calculations as a carrier-grade offering for business customers that are managed by a network operator. Required components and functionality for these offerings include an SDN service architecture that provides dynamic optimization of traffic flows, a purpose-built SD-WAN appliance or CPE-hosted SD-WAN virtual network function at each customer edge site, support for multiple active underlay connectivity services, automated failover fast enough to maintain active sessions, and centralized network orchestration with traffic and application visibility end-to-end. Security capabilities may be supplied by a managed SD-WAN service provider based on customer requirements.
