London, 17th June, 2009 – Masergy, a global network service provider specialising in simplifying business networks for enterprises, is proud to announce that it came away as the winner of the ‘Advanced Video Services Innovation Award’ at last night’s Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation Awards 2009 at the Park Lane Hotel in London.

The GTB Innovation Awards are designed to honour innovative projects involving telecoms operators and service providers around the world. Masergy entered the award for a pioneering project that it carried out in February 2009 with Musion, the company behind the patented 3‐D hologram telepresence system. The world’s first live interactive 3‐D hologram to be demonstrated from a permanently installed line connection took place on Friday 6th February, between Masergy’s office in Farringdon and Musion’s office at 35 Portland Place, central London.

Previously a sci‐fi technology limited to episodes of Star Trek and Star Wars, 3‐D holograms can now be used as a business tool for live and interactive meetings between people in different locations. Appearing as a 3‐D hologram, users are able to see, view and interact with their remote audience. This technological advancement is thanks to a combination of unique and patented 3‐D holographic technology from Musion, Eyeliner® Foil (already used by the likes of Madonna, Gorillaz, Sir Richard Branson, Lewis Hamilton and HRH Prince Charles), and a special high‐speed global network connection from Masergy that optimises the delivery of an HD video signal.

The technology shows how business executives can negate travelling to meetings by communicating via 3‐D hologram. The business benefits of this technology are more immediate personal interaction, less lifestyle interruption and a lowered carbon footprint. The technology Musion uses also makes extensive use of the latest generation lower power and lower heat LED lighting; in fact, the lighting used to film the holograms could be run off AA batteries.

The 3‐D image is created by Musion’s unique HD video image capture processes and patented Eyeliner® Foil apparatus. Smooth motion is on account of Musion’s faster frame rate of 50 interlaced frames per second, which creates the natural image edge blurring necessary for 3‐D images to look realistic. This incredible quality is possible because Masergy’s global network was purpose‐built to deliver superior video performance at all times and under all network conditions.

Hundreds of nominations for the industry’s innovative projects were received from the readers of Global Telecoms Business since early in 2009. The winners, as selected by the judging panel, represent the most innovative projects in the industry worldwide in five key categories:

  1. Fixed network infrastructure innovation
  2. Wireless network infrastructure innovation
  3. Wholesale service innovation
  4. Business service innovation
  5. Consumer service innovation

Awards went to projects in each category, with each project – wherever possible – represented by a telecoms service provider and one or more suppliers.

In addition, there are three editor’s awards, one for a company, one for an industry association and one for an individual, for their own contributions to the telecoms business.

The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2009 and the Global Telecoms Business Innovation Summit were sponsored by Juniper Networks and Hewlett‐Packard. The sponsors played no part in the selection of nominations or the final judging process.
