World’s First Live and Interactive 3D Hologram Communication Between Permanent Line Connections Demonstrated on International Broadcaster

LONDON: Monday 16th February, 2009 – Previously a sci-fi technology limited to episodes of Star Trek and films like Star Wars, 3D holograms can now be used as a business tool for live and interactive meetings between people in different locations. Appearing as a 3D hologram, users are able to see, view and interact with their remote audience. This technological advancement is thanks to a combination of unique and patented 3D holographic technology from Musion (already used by the likes of Madonna, Gorillaz, Sir Richard Branson, Lewis Hamilton and HRH Prince Charles) and a special high-speed global network connection from Masergy that optimises the delivery of an HD video signal.

The world’s first live interactive 3D hologram demonstration from a permanent line connection took place on Friday 6th February, 35 Portland Place, central London (Musion’s offices).

The technology shows how business executives can negate travelling to meetings by communicating via 3D hologram. The business benefits of this technology are more immediate personal interaction, less lifestyle interruption and a lowered carbon footprint. The technology Musion uses also makes extensive use of the latest generation lower power and lower heat LED lighting; in fact the lighting used to film the holograms could be run off AA batteries.

Futuristic technology in 18th Century building
The permanent connection is between Masergy and Musion’s offices in London. The two holograms will appear at the Musion office, which ironically is an 18th Century Grade II listed building near Regents Park. The recording will be live and interactive: CNN’s famous Business Traveller anchorman, Richard Quest, will be on the sofa in one of Musion’s decadent office rooms (that actually looks more like a Georgian living room) and will be talking to two holograms in the room – Musion’s Director, Ian O’Connell, and Masergy’s Senior VP of Business Development, John Dumbleton. They will in reality be based in Masergy’s office in Farringdon.

Brief technology explanation:
The 3D image is created by Musion’s unique HD video image capture processes and patented Eyeliner® Foil apparatus. Smooth motion is on account of Musion’s faster frame rate of 50 interlaced frames per second, which creates the natural image edge blurring necessary for 3D images to look realistic. This incredible quality is possible because Masergy’s global network was purpose-built to deliver superior video performance at all times and under all network conditions.
