SIP Phone Group Paging service is available with either Cisco MPP IP telephones or Polycom telephones within a customer location site but not between multiple sites within the Masergy UCaaS environment. There are many points to consider before enabling this feature capability for your business, which can lead to broadcast storms or multicast communication which would have a negative effect on the voice network.
Note: You cannot have a mix of Polycom and Cisco MPP phones used with this SIP Phone Group Paging service within a customer location site because each phone type uses a different multicast parameter incompatible with the other.
One limitation, all the telephones are located within the same group location and other users in other group locations cannot access another location’s SIP Phone group paging service.
For example, a customer has offices in both Los Angeles and New York City. All the telephones within Los Angeles may SIP Phone group page any telephone within the Los Angeles location, but cannot use the SIP Phone group paging of the New York City office location.
Second limitation, is bandwidth used in a SIP Phone group page is a single conversation multiplied by the number of telephones in the zone group or location. For example, a single group page to 60 telephones is equivalent to a single voice call of ~80 Kb x 60 telephones = 480 Kb. And if multiple people use group paging simultaneously can be extremely detrimental to the network.
The default Codec used for SIP Phone Group Paging is G.722 and cannot be altered.
Masergy Support would need to configure all the telephones for this service. Any telephone can be excluded from group paging announcements entirely. And if a telephone is off hook on an active call and can be prevented from hearing an announcement as well.
